In the 2024/25 coffee year, Colombia produced approximately 14.9 million 60-kilogram bags, the highest output in over 30 years and a 16.5 per cent increase over the previous year.
Colombia's coffee industry is built on a foundation that few other countries can match: extraordinary geography. The country sits astride the Andes Mountains, which split into three parallel ranges — the Cordillera Occidental, Central, and Oriental — as they pass through Colombian territory. This triple-Andes structure creates an enormous number of distinct microclimates, each with its own combination of altitude, rainfall, temperature, and soil composition. Coffee is grown on the slopes of all three ranges, at altitudes between 1,200 and 2,200 metres above sea level, across approximately 837,000 hectares of cultivated land managed by nearly 550,000 farming families.
The organisational backbone of Colombian coffee is the Federación Nacional de Cafeteros (FNC, commonly known as Fedecafé), which has operated since 1927 as a trade association representing Colombian coffee growers. Fedecafé manages quality control, research through its Cenicafé research centre, and the international marketing of Colombian coffee — including the iconic Juan Valdez character, one of the most recognised agricultural brand symbols in history.
